Glow Line vs voicemail

Voicemail is often part of your phone plan but tells a caller nothing. Glow Line answers missed calls from your price list for $29 a month and texts you.

Glow Line is made by the Glow Tally team, so this comparison is our own. Every fact about another product links to that product's own page.

Voicemail is the default for a salon, studio or barber when nobody can reach the phone, and it is often part of the mobile plan you already pay for. It works well when callers are happy to leave a message and wait. It works badly when the caller wants an answer now: a price, whether you open Saturday, whether there is anything this week. Glow Line answers those calls from the services, prices and hours you saved, takes a booking request and texts it to you, for $29 a month on the Line plan. If you miss a handful of calls a week from regulars who know you, voicemail is probably enough. If you miss several a day and many are new clients, an answered line earns its keep.

The two side by side

Voicemail Glow Line
Cost Usually part of your phone plan already; Telstra, for example, turns MessageBank on by default on its Upfront plans. Check your own plan Line: $29 a month, No GST, 40 answered calls. Salon: $84 a month, 200 calls
What the caller gets A greeting and a beep An answer from your list: prices, durations, hours and anything in your notes
What you get A recording to listen to, when you have a minute A text with the caller's name, the service, their preferred time and mobile, or a short summary
Booking You call back and arrange it A booking request on your Bookings page; you confirm by text
Caller who will not talk to a machine Leaves a message, or hangs up Can ask for a person; the assistant takes a message for a call back
When it picks up After your phone's ring time; Telstra lets you set it to 15, 20, 25 or 30 seconds After about twenty seconds unanswered, through the divert code your dashboard shows
What is kept The caller's own voice The words exchanged and a summary; no audio
Setup Usually none Type in services and hours, get your number, dial one divert code
Turning it off Your carrier's settings One code switches the divert off and the phone goes back to voicemail or ringing out, as before
Suits Low call volumes, regular clients, owners who return calls quickly Busy rooms where the phone rings through appointments and new clients ring for prices

What a caller does with voicemail

A caller who reaches voicemail has three choices: leave a message, try again later, or ring somewhere else. Nobody can tell you from your own phone how many took the third option, because a hang-up before the beep leaves nothing behind but a missed call in the log. The callers who do leave a message have told you their name and a number, and usually little else that helps you book them.

A caller who reaches Glow Line hears the business name and that it is the virtual assistant for the team, then can ask what a gel removal costs, how long a deep tissue massage runs or whether you are open on Sunday, and get the answer you typed. If they want to book, the assistant takes their name, mobile, the service and when suits them, and tells them the team will confirm by text.

The time it takes you

Here is a worked month for a solo massage therapist doing hour-long treatments, who cannot answer during sessions and misses about 30 calls a month.

With voicemail. Say 20 of the 30 leave a message. Each takes a minute to play back and four to call back, counting the calls that reach the client's own voicemail and need a second go. That is 100 minutes of returning calls, mostly squeezed between clients or after hours, plus whatever the other 10 callers would have booked.

With Glow Line. All 30 calls are answered, inside Line's allowance of 40. Each ends as a text to her mobile. Confirming a request is a tap on the mobile number and a one-line text, call it a minute each: 30 minutes, and no phone tag. The cost is $29 for the month.

The numbers are an example, not a promise; your own call log will tell you the real ones. Count a fortnight of missed calls before you decide, and if an answered line wins, compare the AI receptionists on offer.

Where voicemail is the better choice

  • It often costs nothing beyond the plan you already have, and an answered line costs $29 or more a month.
  • The caller's tone comes through: an upset client or a nervous bride sounds different from a quick price check.
  • There is nothing to set up or keep up to date.
  • Some clients will not talk to an AI at all, and would rather leave a message.
  • If you miss only a few calls a week and ring back within the hour, callers rarely mind.

Using the two together

They are not either-or. The divert is easy to switch: dial the code on divert your missed calls when you are working, and dial the off code on your day off so calls go back to voicemail. While the divert is on, unanswered calls go to Glow Line instead of your voicemail; calls when your phone is off or busy may still reach voicemail, depending on how your carrier handles those cases.

On the Free plan there is no phone line at all, but you can still help voicemail along. Free costs no money and needs no card, and is paid for by agreeing to marketing emails and calls from us and our partners. It gives you a booking page with up to 10 requests a month. Put its link in your voicemail greeting, for example "leave a message, or request a time at the link in our Instagram bio", so a caller has somewhere to go besides waiting.

FAQ

Will Glow Line replace my voicemail?

Only while the divert is on, and only for calls you do not answer. Switch the divert off with the code on your dashboard and your phone goes back to doing what it did before.

Does Glow Line keep a recording like voicemail does?

No. Glow Line stores no audio. It keeps the words exchanged, a summary, the caller's number and the times, and shows the summary on your Bookings page. See call summaries.

Is voicemail really free?

It depends on your plan. Telstra, for one, turns MessageBank on by default on its Upfront plans, and its support page states no charge for checking messages from within Australia. Ask your own carrier about yours.

What if I miss more calls than the Line plan covers?

Calls past 40 are still answered, up to 80, each marked on your Bookings page. If that happens two months running, Salon covers 200 calls for $84 a month. See call allowance and the ceiling.

How we checked

The voicemail facts were checked on Telstra's own support page in October 2026; Glow Line's are from our pricing and help pages.
